October

Born in Turkey and with an ancestry that encompasses Dutch, German and
Indian heritage 26 year old Julian Smith is one of the most eagerly
watched electronic artists working in the UK. Under the guise of
October he combines forensic sampling and audio recording with a
radical remodelling of the synthetic and rhythmic principles of techno
music. His preoccupation with found sounds fuses with a love for the
anomalies of analogue hardware and the precision of the digital era,
creating a sonic platform that explores an interplay between the
designed and the accidental whilst unpacking the intricacies of rhythm
within his own stylised futurist aesthetic. Smith's inspiring energy
and desire for the new is equally evident in his dj sets, which show a
natural talent for manipulating dance floors, laying down a
distinctive manifesto
that builds a contact point between the mechanised and the personal,
delivering an experience of electronic music unique to his own
singular vision. This dialogue further extends through his label
Caravan, which is dedicated to communicating the expressive qualities
of music and opening up the possibilities for artists working within
the club context to engage with detailed electronics and sonic
experimentation. |
